Amy Jade Winehouse (born 14 September 1983) is an English singer and songwriter, known for her eclectic mix of various musical genres including R&B, soul, jazz, rock & roll, and ska. Winehouse is best known for her soulful, powerful contralto vocals.

Winehouse's 2003 debut album Frank was commercially and critically successful in her native Britain. It was nominated for the Mercury Prize. Her 2006 follow-up album Back to Black led to six Grammy Award nominations and five wins, tying the record for the most wins by a female artist in a single night, and made Winehouse the first British singer to win five Grammys, including three of the "Big Four": Best New Artist, Record of the Year and Song of the Year. On 14 February 2007, she won a BRIT Award for Best British Female Artist; she had also been nominated for Best British Album. She has won the Ivor Novello Award three times, one in 2004 for Best Contemporary Song (musically and lyrically) for "Stronger Than Me", one in 2007 for Best Contemporary Song for "Rehab", and one in 2008 for Best Song Musically and Lyrically for "Love Is a Losing Game", among other prestigious distinctions.

Winehouse has received media attention apart from her singing. Her distinctive style has been the muse for fashion designers such as Karl Lagerfeld. The singer's problems with drug and alcohol addiction, as well as self-destructive behaviour, have become regular tabloid news since 2007. She and her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, have been plagued by legal troubles that left him serving prison time and a subsequent pending divorce. In 2008, Winehouse faced a series of health complications that threatened both her career and her life.
Early life
Amy Winehouse was born in the Southgate area of Enfield, London to a Jewish family who shared her love of jazz music. She was raised in a family of four: her father Mitchell (a taxi driver), her mother Janis (a pharmacist), and her older brother Alex. Mitchell would constantly sing around the house, often singing Frank Sinatra to young Amy, who also took to a constant habit of singing to the point that teachers found it difficult keeping her quiet in class.

At the age of nine, her grandmother, Cynthia, suggested she attend the Susi Earnshaw Theatre School for further training. At age ten, Winehouse founded a short-lived rap group called Sweet 'n' Sour with childhood friend Juliette Ashby. She stayed at the Earnshaw school for four years before seeking full time training at Sylvia Young Theatre School, but was allegedly expelled at fourteen for "not applying herself" and for piercing her nose. With other children from the Sylvia Young School, she appeared in an episode of The Fast Show in 1997. She later attended the BRIT School in Selhurst, Croydon and attended Ashmole School.

Career

Early career
After toying with her brother's guitar, Winehouse received her first guitar when she was thirteen, and began writing music a year later. She began working soon after, including as a "showbiz journalist" for the World Entertainment News Network in addition to singing with a jazz band. Her sometimes boyfriend at the time, soul singer Tyler James, sent her demo tape to an A&R person. The tape led to her signing with record label Island/Universal under Simon Fuller's company 19 Management, and to a publishing deal with EMI.

Major label success

Performing at the Bowery Ballroom, New York CityAmy Winehouse's debut album, Frank, was released on 20 October 2003. Produced mainly by Salaam Remi, many songs had jazz-influences and, apart from two covers, every song was co-written by Winehouse. The album received positive reviews with compliments over the "cool, critical gaze" in its lyrics and brought comparisons of her voice to Sarah Vaughan, Macy Gray and others.

The album entered the upper levels of the UK album chart in 2004 when it was nominated for BRIT Awards in the categories of "British Female Solo Artist" and "British Urban Act". It went on to achieve platinum sales. Later in 2004, she won the Ivor Novello songwriting Award for Best Contemporary Song, alongside Salaam Remi, with her contribution to the first single, "Stronger Than Me". The album also made the short list for the 2004 Mercury Music Prize. In the same year, she performed at the Glastonbury festival, on the Jazzworld stage, and at the V Festival.

After the release of the album, Winehouse commented that she was "only 80 percent behind [the] album" because of the inclusion by her record label of certain songs and mixes she disliked. Upon the release of her second album, she stated "I can’t even listen to Frank any more — in fact, I’ve never been able to. I like playing the tracks live because that’s different, but listening to them is another story." She later clarified this, saying: "I listen to it differently now. I am still really proud of it, I still think it's a great album. But, with hindsight, there are some things I would have done differently... Just because I would do things a bit differently now doesn't mean I don't like what's on that album."

International success
In contrast to her jazz-influenced former album, Winehouse's focus shifted to the girl groups of the 1950s and 1960s. In an interview, Winehouse explained, "After Frank I didn’t write for 18 months but when I met Mark [Ronson] I pretty much wrote the album in six months — he was so inspiring." Winehouse hired New York singer Sharon Jones's longtime band, the Dap-Kings to back her up in the studio and on tour. In May 2006, Winehouse's demonstration tracks such as "You Know I'm No Good" and "Rehab" appeared on Mark Ronson's New York radio show on East Village Radio. These were some of the first new songs played on the radio after the release of "Pumps" and both were slated to appear on her second album. The 11-track album was produced entirely by Salaam Remi and Ronson, with the production credits being split between them. Promotion of Back to Black soon began, and in early October 2006, Winehouse's official website was re-launched with a new layout and clips of previously unreleased songs.

Back to Black was released in the UK on 30 October 2006. It went to number one on the UK Albums Chart numerous times, and entered at number seven on the Billboard 200 in the United States. By 25 October, the album was approaching 5x platinum in the UK, making it the best-selling album of 2007.

The album spawned a number of singles. The first single released from the album on 23 October 2006 was the Ronson-produced "Rehab". The song was a number-seven single in the UK,"Rehab" peaked at number nine on the Billboard Hot 100 the week of 21 June, shortly after a performance of it on the 2007 MTV Movie Awards. Time magazine named "Rehab" one of the 10 Best Songs of 2007, ranking it at number one. Writer Josh Tyrangiel praised Winehouse for her confidence, opining, "What she is mouthy, funny, sultry, and quite possibly crazy" and, "It's impossible not to be seduced by her originality. Combine it with production by Mark Ronson that references four decades worth of soul music without once ripping it off, and you've got the best song of 2007." Also in 2007 Jay Z remixed the song by adding new verses.

The album's second single, "You Know I'm No Good" was released on 8 January 2007 with a remix featuring rap vocals by Ghostface Killah. It ultimately reached number 18 on the UK singles chart. Back to Black was released in the United States in March 2007, with "You Know I'm No Good" as its lead single. The title track, "Back to Black", was released in the UK on 30 April 2007 and peaked at number 25. A deluxe edition of Back to Black was also released on 5 November 2007 in the UK. The bonus disc features B-sides, rare, and live tracks, as well as "Valerie". Winehouse's debut DVD I Told You I Was Trouble: Live in London was released the same day in the U.K. and 13 November in the U.S. It includes a live set recorded at London's Shepherds Bush Empire and a 50-minute documentary charting the singer's career over the previous four years. On 10 December 2007, the final single from Back to Black, "Love Is a Losing Game", was released in the United Kingdom and U.S.

Frank was released in the United States on 20 November 2007 to positive reviews. The album debuted at number 61 on the Billboard 200 chart.

Winehouse's tour, however, did not go as well. In November 2007, the opening night of a 17-date tour was marred by booing and walkouts at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham. A music critic for the Birmingham Mail newspaper said it was "one of the saddest nights of my life...I saw a supremely talented artist reduced to tears, stumbling around the stage and, unforgivably, swearing at the audience." Other concerts ended similarly, until she announced on 27 November 2007, that her performances and public appearances were cancelled for the remainder of 2007, citing doctor advice to take a complete rest. A statement issued by concert promoter Live Nation blamed "the rigours involved in touring and the intense emotional strain that Amy has been under in recent weeks" for the decision.

In addition to her own album, she has collaborated with other artists on singles. Winehouse was a vocalist on the song "Valerie" on Ronson's solo album Version. The song peaked at number two in the UK, upon its October single release. The song was nominated for a 2008 Brit Award for "Best British Single". Her work with ex-Sugababe Mutya Buena, "B Boy Baby," was released on 17 December 2007. It served as the fourth single from Buena's solo debut album Real Girl.

Performing at Eurockéennes 2007By year's end, Winehouse had garnered numerous accolades and awards. The singer won 2008 Grammy Awards in the categories of Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for the single "Rehab", while her album Back to Black was nominated for Album of the Year and won the Record of the Year award. Producer Mark Ronson's work with her won the award in the Producer of the Year Non-Classical category.[46] The singer also earned a Grammy in the 'Best New Artist' category. This earned Winehouse an entry in the 2009 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records for Most Grammy Awards won by a British Female Act. She performed "You Know I’m No Good" and "Rehab" at the awards ceremony on 10 February 2008 via satellite, as her visa approval came through too late for her to travel to the U.S. She said "This is for London because Camden town is burning down," in reference to the Camden Market fire. The nominations, announced in early December, led to a 48 percent increase in the sales of Back to Black in the United States. Post Grammy Awards, album sales increased by 368 percent over the prior week, to the number 2 position in the United States.

On 13 January 2008, Back to Black held the number one position on the Billboard Pan European charts for the third straight week. In January 2008, Universal Music International said it believed that there was a correlation between amount of albums sold and the extensive media coverage the singer has received.

On 20 February 2008, Winehouse performed at the 2008 BRIT Awards, performing "Valerie" with Mark Ronson, followed by "Love Is a Losing Game". She urged the crowd to "make some noise for my Blake."

Performing at Eurockéennes in Belfort, Territoire de Belfort, France on 29 June 2007A special deluxe edition of "Back to Black" topped the UK album charts on 2 March 2008. The original edition of the album resided at the number 30 position, in its 68th week on the charts, while "Frank" charted at number 35. By 12 March, the album had sold a total of 2,467,575 copies, 318,350 of those in the previous 10 weeks, putting the album on the UK's top 10 best-selling albums of the 21st century for the first time. On 7 April, "Back to Black" was residing at the top position on the pan-European charts for the sixth consecutive and thirteenth aggregate week.

In Paris, she performed what was described as a "well-executed 40 minute" set at the opening of a Fendi boutique.

Back to Black was the world's seventh biggest selling album for 2008. These sales helped keep Universal Music's recorded music division from dropping to levels experienced by the overall music market.

At the 2008 Ivor Novello Awards, Winehouse became the first artist to receive two nominations for the top award, best song, musically and lyrically. She won the award for "Love Is a Losing Game" and was nominated for "You Know I'm No Good". "Rehab", a Novello winner for best contemporary song in 2006, also received a 2008 nomination for bestselling British song. Winehouse was nominated for a MTV Europe Award in the Act of The Year category.

Amy Winehouse - The Girl Done Good: A Documentary Review a 78 minute DVD was released on 14 April 2008. The documentary features interviews with those who knew her at a young age, helped her gain success, jazz music experts, as well as music and pop culture specialists.

Winehouse's "Valerie" is on a three disc 60 song compilation album entitled Now That's What I Call Music 25 Years, released in October 2008.

A clip of Winehouse's music is included in the "Roots and Influences" area that looks at connections between different artists at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Annex NYC, which opened in December 2008. One thread starts with Billie Holiday continues with Aretha Franklin, Mary J. Blige and finishes with Winehouse.

In a poll of United States residents conducted for VisitBritain by Harris Interactive that was released in March 2009, one fifth of those polled indicated they had listened to Winehouse's music during the previous year.

Current projects
According to a newspaper report Universal Music pressed her regarding new material in 2008. According to that same report Winehouse as of 2 September had not been near a recording studio. It was noted that she had touring obligations during the summer and also that if an album was quickly recorded, it would be at least a year before an album could be released. In late October, Winehouse's spokesperson was quoted as saying that Winehouse has not been given a deadline to complete her third album, for which she is learning to play drums. On 4 November Universal Music chairman Lucian Grange was quoted as saying he is optimistic a new album will be out soon and that demo tracks and acoustic songs she played for him have been "sensational".

Winehouse was asked to participate in the forthcoming tribute album for Quincy Jones.. but in May 2009 Mark Ronson was quoted in a British tabloid as saying Winehouse was dropped from the project because the track she was to contribute to the album was not finished and Winehouse was "not around".

It was announced on Winehouse's website that on 24 November, 2008 a digi pack 4 disk set containing her albums Frank and Back to Black was scheduled to be released.

During her 2009 stay in St. Lucia Winehouse worked on new music with producer Salaam Remi. According to a July 2009 magazine report Winehouse was to showcase the new music to members of her band in the United Kingdom later that month..

Attributions of influence
British singer Adele has credited the success Winehouse has had in the United States for making her and fellow British singer Duffy's journey to the United States "a bit smoother". American singer Lady GaGa credited Winehouse with paving the way for her rise to the top of the charts. She appeared to be using a metaphorical analogy to explain that Winehouse made it easier for offbeat women to have mainstream pop success.

The "Winehouse phenomenon" has been credited by Sebastian Danchin author of Encyclopedia of Rhythm & Blues and Soul of kick starting a revival of soul music that has been ongoing since 2000. Danchin quoting Raphael Saadiq, Anthony Hamilton, and John Legend said "Amy Winehouse was produced by people who wanted to create a marketing coup. The positive side is that it reacquainted an audience with this music and played an introductory role for others. This reinvigorated the genre by overcoming the vintage aspect".

Touring and appearances

She performed headlining gigs in September and November 2006, including one of the Little Noise Sessions charity concerts at the Union Chapel, Islington. On 31 December 2006, Winehouse appeared on Jools Holland's Annual Hootenanny and performed a cover of Marvin Gaye's "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" along with Paul Weller and Holland's Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. She also performed Toots & the Maytals' "Monkey Man". She began a run of another fourteen gigs beginning in February 2007. At his request Bruce Willis introduced Winehouse before her performance of "Rehab" at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards. Winehouse made awards organizers nervous when she went on a Las Vegas jaunt in the hours before the show. During the summer of 2007, Winehouse performed at various festivals, including UK's Glastonbury Festival, Chicago's Lollapalooza festival, Rock Werchter and Baltimore's Virgin Music Festival. However, Winehouse cancelled her appearance at Provinssirock in Seinäjoki, Finland on 17 June 2007, citing a sore throat. Amid controversy surrounding her health, drug use, and her husband, in October 2007, she cancelled her tour dates for the remainder of the year.

Although her father, manager and various members of her touring team reportedly tried to dissuade her, Winehouse performed at the Rock in Rio Lisboa festival in Lisbon, Portugal in May 2008. Although the set was plagued by a late arrival and problems with her voice, the crowd warmed to her. In addition to her own material she performed two Specials covers.

Winehouse performed at Nelson Mandela's 90th Birthday Party concert at London's Hyde Park on the 27 June. and the next day at the Glastonbury Festival.. On the 12 July at the Oxegen Festival she performed a well received 50 minute set which was followed the next day by a 14 song set a T in the Park. On 16 August she played at the Staffordshire leg of the V Festival the following day played the Chelmsford leg of the festival. Organizers said that Winehouse attracted the biggest crowds of the festival. Audience reaction was reported as mixed. On 6 September she was the headliner at the Bestival festival. She performed what was described as a polished set which ended with her storming off the stage. Her hour late arrival caused her set to be cut off at the halfway point due to a curfew. According to a July statement by Winehouse's father, Bestival was her last live performance "for the foreseeable future" because of her health problems.

Winehouse is scheduled to perform on a new live music program MTV World Stage.

In May 2009 Winehouse returned to performing at a Jazz festival in St. Lucia amid torrential downpours and technical difficulties. During her hour long set it was reported she was unsteady on her feet and had trouble remembering lyrics. She apologized to the crowd for being "bored" and ended her set by walking off the stage in the middle of a song. A scheduled 31 May concert performance at Shepherds Bush Empire in London was cancelled.

Club nights
On 10 July 2008, Winehouse launched her own club night, Snakehips at the Monarch, in the Camden Monarch venue in London. Although billed as a DJ battle between her and another DJ, she stayed behind the decks swaying as another person actually played 1960s music. She appeared at another Snakeships event at the Monarch on the night of 11 September. After reportedly arriving two hours late she spun music and played a short acoustic set.

Personal life

Relationships
Winehouse married on-off boyfriend Blake Fielder-Civil, a former video production assistant,on 18 May 2007, in Miami, Florida. Fielder-Civil was a "grammar school dropout" who moved to London at aged 16 from his native Lincolnshire. In a June 2007 interview, Winehouse admitted she could be violent towards Fielder-Civil when she had been drinking. In a July 2008 interview Winehouse said her marriage is not an open one and she would like to have at least five children. Fielder-Civil was quoted in a British tabloid on 28 November 2008 that he wants to end his marriage to the singer, saying, "I have to let her go to save her life".

Winehouse was spotted with aspiring actor Josh Bowman on holiday in St. Lucia in early January 2009, saying she was "in love again, and I don't need drugs." She commented that the "whole marriage was based on doing drugs" and that "for the time being I've just forgotten I'm even married." On 12 January, Winehouse's spokesperson confirmed that "papers have been received" for what Fielder-Civil's solicitor has said is divorce proceedings based on a claim of adultery. On 25 February Blake Fielder-Civil was quoted as saying that he plans to continue divorce proceedings in order to give himself a drug-free fresh start. In March Winehouse was quoted in a magazine as saying "I still love Blake and I want him to move into my new house with me — that was my plan all along ... I won't let him divorce me. He's the male version of me and we're perfect for each other."

Winehouse and Fielder-Civil were granted a divorce on 16 July 2009, which will become final on 28 August 2009. Neither party attended the hearing or were in court to witness the event. Fielder-Civil filed for divorce earlier in 2009 on the grounds of infidelity; Winehouse did not contest the divorce.

Substance abuse and mental health issues
Winehouse's battles with substance abuse have been the subject of much media attention. In various interviews, she has admitted to having problems with self-harm, depression and eating disorders. During a visit with Mitch Winehouse at the prison in July 2008, Fielder-Civil reportedly said that he and Winehouse would cut themselves to ease the pain of withdrawal. In 2005, she went through a period of drinking, heavy drug use, violent mood swings and weight loss. People who saw her during that fall and early 2006 reported a rebound that coincided with the writing of Back to Black. Her family believes that the summer 2006 death of her grandmother, who was a stabilizing influence, set off a free fall into addiction.

Blake Fielder-Civil was quoted in a British tabloid as saying he introduced crack cocaine and heroin to Winehouse. Her husband's counsel testified in court that for over half his life Blake Fielder-Civil has had a "intimate relationship with drug addiction" including heroin and cocaine as well as a history of self-harm and suicide attempts. In August 2007, Winehouse cancelled a number of shows in the UK and Europe, citing exhaustion and ill health. She was hospitalized during this period for what was reported as an overdose of heroin, ecstasy, cocaine, ketamine and alcohol. Winehouse told a magazine that the drugs were to blame for her hospitalization and that "I really thought that it was over for me then." Soon after, Winehouse and her husband were photographed, bloodied and bruised, in the streets of London after an alleged fight, although she contended her injuries were self-inflicted. Winehouse's parents and in-laws publicly reported their numerous concerns, citing fears that the two might commit suicide, with Fielder-Civil's father encouraging fans to boycott her music. Winehouse's father commented that when he had made public statements regarding her problems, he was using the media because it seemed the only way to get through to her.

On 2 December 2007, images of the singer outside her home in the early morning hours, barefoot and wearing only a bra and jeans, appeared on the internet and in tabloid newspapers. In a statement, her spokesperson blamed paparazzi harassment for the incident. The spokesperson reported that the singer was in a physician-supervised program and was channelling her difficulties by writing a lot of music.

The British tabloid The Sun posted a video of a woman, alleged to be Winehouse, apparently smoking crack cocaine and speaking of having taken ecstasy and valium. Winehouse's father moved in with her, and Island Records, her record label, announced the abandonment of plans for an American promotion campaign on her behalf. In late January 2008, Winehouse reportedly entered a rehabilitation facility for a two week treatment program.

On 23 January 2008, the video was passed on to Scotland Yard, Metropolitan Police, who questioned her on 5 February. To date no charges have been brought.

On 26 March 2008, Winehouse's spokesperson said she was "doing well" and denied a published report in a British tabloid that consideration was being given to having her return to rehab. Her record company reportedly believed that her recovery remained fragile.

By late April 2008, her erratic behaviour, including an allegation of assault, caused fear that her drug rehabilitation efforts have been unsuccessful,leading to efforts by Winehouse's father and manager to seek assistance in having her sectioned.

Her disheveled appearance during and after a scheduled club night in September sparked new fears. Photographers were quoted as saying she appeared to have cuts on her legs and arms.

In a interview released in June 2009 Winehouse's father said the singer was in a drug replacement programme. He said she was gradually recovering but that heavy alcohol use was causing "slight backward steps". A documentary shot early in 2009 shows Winehouse apparently intoxicated according to a newspaper report.

Pictures published by a magazine in July 2009 upon her return to the United Kingdom from her extended stay in St. Lucia appeared to show that Winehouse had gained weight and that her complexion was improved.

Health issues
On 23 June 2008, Winehouse's publicist corrected earlier misstatements by Mitch Winehouse that his daughter has a small amount of emphysema, instead claiming she has signs of what could lead to early-stage emphysema. Mitch Winehouse had also stated that his daughter's lungs are operating at 70 percent capacity and that she had an irregular heartbeat. Mr. Winehouse said these problems were caused by her chain cigarette smoking and crack cocaine use. The singer’s father also reported that doctors have warned Winehouse that continued smoking of crack cocaine will result in her having to wear an oxygen mask and will be fatal. In a radio interview, Mitch Winehouse said the singer is responding "fabulously" to treatment which includes being covered with nicotine patches. British Lung Foundation spokesperson Dr. Keith Prowse noted this type of condition can be managed with treatment. Prowse also said the condition is not normal for a person her age but "heavy smoking and inhaling other substances like drugs can age the lungs prematurely". Dr. Norman H. Edelman, Chief Medical Officer for the American Lung Association explained that if she stopped smoking her lung functions would decline at the rate of a normal person but continued smoking would lead to a more rapid decline in lung function. Photographs of the singer with a cigarette in her mouth, taken 23 June 2008, were widely published. Winehouse was released from The London Clinic 24 hours after returning from a temporary leave in order to perform at the Mandela 90th birthday and Glastonbury concerts, and is now being treated as an outpatient. On 23 July Winehouse stated that she had been diagnosed with "some areas of emphysema" and said she is getting herself together by "eating loads of healthy food, sleeping loads, playing my guitar, making music and writing letters to my husband every day".

Winehouse began precautionary testing on her lungs and chest on 25 October 2008, at The London Clinic for what has been reported as a chest infection. Winehouse who has been in and out of the facility has been granted permission to set her own schedule regarding home leave. She returned to the hospital on 23 November 2008 for a reported reaction to her medication.

Legal problems
Winehouse settled a claim for copyright infringement over the song "He Can Only Hold Her", brought against her by songwriter and producer P-Nut in September 2007. His lawyer stated that the songwriter would receive a share of the royalties from the song and payment of costs. Previously he had received a "thank you" for his contribution but no songwriter credit on the album.

In October 2007, Winehouse and her husband were arrested in Bergen, Norway for possession of seven grams of marijuana. The couple were later released and fined 3850 kroner (around £350). Winehouse first appealed the fines claiming she was "duped" into confessing, but later dropped the appeal.

Winehouse was initially denied a U.S. visa because of "use and abuse of narcotics", but was later issued one, although the decision came too late for her to appear live at the 2008 Grammy Awards show, and she performed via satellite.

On 26 April 2008, Winehouse was cautioned after she admitted to police she slapped a man in the face: a "common assault" offense. The incident, for which she has apologised, will stay on her record and could be used against her if she is charged with a similar offence at a future time. She voluntarily turned herself in and was held overnight. Police said, at her arrival she was "in no fit state" to be interviewed.

Winehouse was arrested on 7 May 2008 on suspicion of possessing drugs after a video of her apparently smoking crack cocaine was passed to Scotland Yard in January, but was released on bail a few hours later because they could not confirm, from the video, what she was smoking. The Crown Prosecution Service considered charging her with possessing a controlled drug and allowing her premises to be used for the supply by others of a controlled drug, but she was cleared when the service could not establish that the substance in the video was a controlled drug. In reaction to the decision, former Scotland Yard commander John O’Connor said it is an "absolute scandal that nothing could be done" about Winehouse "cooking a snook at the law". Some Members of Parliament also reacted negatively. Two London residents were subsequently charged with conspiracy to supply cocaine and ecstasy to Winehouse. One of the pair was sentenced to two years in prison on 13 December 2008, while the other received a two year community order.

Organisers of the Rock En Seine festival in Paris threatened Winehouse with legal action after the singer cancelled a scheduled appearance there. The organizers claimed they were given two hours notice and no exact reason for the cancellation. Winehouse’s spokesperson explained that the reason that she failed to appear at the festival was because she was taken ill at her home.

On 29 January 2009, Winehouse's home was burglarized while she was away on holiday resulting in the loss of several guitars, recording equipment and a flat screen television according to her spokesperson. Metropolitan Police said some of the electronic equipment taken has been recovered.

On 5 March 2009, Winehouse was arrested and charged with common assault following a claim by a woman that Winehouse hit her in the eye at a September 2008 charity ball. Winehouse's spokesperson announced the singer has canceled a scheduled United States Coachella Festival appearance in "light of current legal issues". Swearing in under her legal name of Amy Jade Civil, Winehouse appeared in court on 17 March to enter her plea of not guilty and the case was adjourned until 23 July.

Fielder-Civil's legal issues
On 9 November 2007, Winehouse's husband and four other men were arrested on a charge of trying to pervert the course of justice in relation to an assault on a pub landlord in June 2007;[148] Fielder-Civil reportedly was hospitalised on 17 February 2008 after collapsing in prison from what was reported to be contaminated heroin. Fielder-Civil and his 3 co-defendants pled guilty to both the pervert the course of justice charge, as well as a charge of grievous bodily harm with intent, on 6 June 2008. Winehouse was rebuked for her behaviour several times by court officials during the legal proceedings in the matter. In testimony before the court the prosecution revealed that the landlord, who suffered a broken cheek in the attack, accepted £200,000 as part of a deal to "effectively throw the [court] case and not turn up”. The prosecution testified that the money used to pay off the landlord belonged to Winehouse and that the plot began to unravel when a middleman involved in the plot, recognising Fielder-Civil's notoriety, tried to sell security camera footage of the attack to The Daily Mirror. The court was told that Winehouse pulled out of a October 2007 meeting with the men involved in the plot, because Winehouse had to attend an awards ceremony. The pub landlord in an interview said he has metal plates and bolts in his head as a result of the attack and that Fielder-Civil since pleading guilty has written him a letter of apology from prison. On 21 July 2008, Fielder-Civil was sentenced to twenty seven months in prison; Winehouse did not attend the sentencing.

In November 2008, Fielder-Civil was moved from prison to a rehabilitation facility, which was a term of release. On 24 November, Fielder-Civil's appeal against his sentence was rejected by two judges who encouraged him to continue rehabilitation, but was returned to jail on 3 December after what was reported as a failure of a drug test. Fielder-Civil was released from prison on 25 February 2009.

Paparazzi
Over the last several years there have been almost daily paparazzi published photographs of Winehouse. The singer has obtained an injunction against them under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997. The court order bans a leading paparazzi agency from following her. Photographers are also banned from following her within 100 meters of her home and photographing Winehouse in her home or the home of her friends and family. According to a newspaper report sources close to the singer said legal action was taken out of concern for the safety of Winehouse and those close to her.

Other pursuits
Winehouse joined a campaign to stop a block of flats being built beside the George Tavern, a famous London East End music venue. Campaign supporters feared the residential development would end the spot's lucrative sideline as a film and photo location, on which it relies to survive.

As part of a breast cancer awareness campaign Winehouse appeared in a revealing photograph for the April 2008 issue of Easy Living magazine.

Winehouse had an estimated £10m fortune, tying her for tenth place in the 2008 Sunday Times listing of the wealth of musicians under age thirty. The following year her fortune had dropped to an estimated £5m. It was reported she earned about £1m singing at two private parties during Paris Fashion Week. as well as another £1m to perform at a Moscow Art Gallery for Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich.

Winehouse has loaned a vintage dress used in her video for Tears Dry on My Own as well as a DVD to the British Music Experience, a new museum dedicated to the history of British Pop.[164] The museum, located in the O2 Centre opened on 9 March 2009.

In January 2009 Winehouse announced that she is launching her own record label. The first act on the label entitled Lioness Records is Winehouse's 13 year old goddaughter Dionne Bromfield. According to a newspaper report there are indications Winehouse is aggressively seeking guests to appear on Bromfield’s debut album. According to a June 2009 newspaper report the label is scheduled to release its first album by Winehouse's backup singer Zalon . Winehouse will provide vocals for the Mark Ronson produced album.

In a May 2009 interview the minister for tourism for the Caribbean island nation of St.Lucia said Winehouse has "been reaching out to the kids, the communities" while living there for the previous several months.

Winehouse and her family are the subject of a documentary shot by Daphne Barak tentatively entitled Saving Amy that will be released later in 2009.

Winehouse plans to work with a number of music-based projects for youth in St. Lucia.

It was announced in June 2009 that Winehouse in a joint venture with EMI is launching a range of wrapping paper and gift cards containing song lyrics from her album Back to Black.

Controversy
Winehouse's dichotomous public image of critical and commercial success versus personal turmoil has proven to be controversial. The New Statesman magazine called Winehouse "a filthy-mouthed, down-to-earth diva,"[174] while Newsweek magazine called her "a perfect storm of sex kitten, raw talent and poor impulse control." Karen Heller with The Philadelphia Inquirer summarized the maelstrom this way:

She's only 24 with six Grammy nods, crashing headfirst into success and despair, with a codependent husband in jail, exhibitionist parents with questionable judgement, and the paparazzi documenting her emotional and physical distress. Meanwhile, a haute designer (Karl Lagerfeld) appropriates her dishevelled style and eating issues to market to the elite while proclaiming her the new Bardot.

By 2008, her continued drug problems threatened her career. Even as Nick Gatfield, the president of Island Records, toyed with the idea of releasing Winehouse "to deal with her problems", he remarked on her talent, saying, "It’s a reflection of her status [in the U.S.] that when you flick through the TV coverage [of the Grammys] it’s her image they use." Post-Grammys, some questioned whether Winehouse should have been honored with the awards given her recent personal and drug problems, including Natalie Cole, who introduced Winehouse at the ceremony. Cole (who battled her own substance-abuse problems while winning a Grammy for Best New Artist in 1975) remarked, "I think the girl is talented, gifted, but it's not right for her to be able to have her cake and eat it too. She needs to get herself together."

In an opinion newspaper commentary, Antonio Maria Costa, executive director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, said that the alleged drug habits of Winehouse and other celebrities sends a bad message "to others who are vulnerable to addiction" and undermines the efforts of other celebrities trying to raise awareness of problems in Africa, now that more cocaine used in Europe passes through Africa.[181] Winehouse's spokesperson called Costa a "ludicrous man" and noted that "Amy has never given a quote about drugs or flaunted it in any way. She's had some problems and is trying to get better. The U.N. should get its own house in order." Graeme Pearson, the former head of Scotland's drug enforcement agency, criticised Winehouse and Kate Moss for making going to rehab a badge of honour, thus giving the false impression that quitting drugs is easy, because many can not afford to go to clinics.

Winehouse has become a staple in popularity polls. The 2008 NME Awards nominated Winehouse in the categories of "Villain of the Year", "Best Solo Artist", and "Best Music DVD"; Winehouse won for "Worst Dressed Performer". In its third annual list, Glamour magazine named Winehouse the third worst dressed British Woman. Winehouse was ranked number two on Richard Blackwell's 48th annual "Ten Worst Dressed Women" list, behind Victoria Beckham. In an April 2008 poll conducted by Sky News, Winehouse was named the second greatest "ultimate heroine" by the UK population at large, topping the voting for that category of those polled under 25 years old. Psychologist Donna Dawson commented that the results demonstrate women like Winehouse who have "a certain sense of vulnerability or have had to fight against some adversity in their lives” receive recognition. Winehouse was voted the second most hated personality in the United Kingdom in a poll conducted one month later by Marketing magazine.

June 2008 brought a report that Winehouse, singing a disparaging chant about blacks, the disabled, and homosexuals, and containing racial epithets about Pakistanis and Indians, was taped by husband Fielder-Civil, despite assurances to her that he was not filming.[190] Winehouse denied allegations that she was a racist, saying "I don't want to play anything down, but I'm the least racist person going."[190] Winehouse added that the film was taken during "really, really happy times."[190]

Speaking at a discussion entitled Winehouse or White House?: Do we go too big on showbiz news? Jeff Zycinski, head of BBC Radio Scotland, said the BBC and media in general were complicit in the destruction of celebrities like Winehouse. He said that public interest in the singer's lifestyle does not make her lifestyle newsworthy. Rod McKenzie editor of the BBC Radio One program Newsbeat replied that "If you play [Amy Winehouse's] music to a certain demographic, those same people want to know what's happening in her private life. If you don't cover it, you're insulting young licence fee payers."

British singer and songwriter Lily Allen was quoted in a Scottish newspaper as saying "I know Amy Winehouse very well. And she is very different to what people portray her as being. Yes, she does get out of her mind on drugs sometimes, but she is also a very clever, intelligent, witty, funny person who can hold it together. You just don't see that side".

Artistic impressions
London's Mall Galleries opened an exhibit in May 2008 that includes a sculpture of Winehouse, entitled Excess. The piece has the singer sitting on top of a smashed champagne bottle, a pool of liquid beneath her feet. The body is covered with what appeared to be tiny pills, while one outstretched hand holds a wine glass.

A wax sculpture of Winehouse went on display at the London Madame Tussauds on 23 July 2008. The singer did not attend the unveiling, although her parents did.

A sculpture by Marco Perego, entitled "The Only Good Rock Star Is a Dead Rock Star", that depicts Winehouse lying in a pool of blood with a bullet hole in her head after being shot by American novelist and beat poet William S. Burroughs, was scheduled to go on display in New York’s Half Gallery on 14 November 2008. The sale price for the sculpture is listed at USD$100,000. Perego said of the sculpture "Rock stars are the sacrificial animals of society." Winehouse’s spokesperson said "It’s a funny kind of tribute. The artist seems in thrall to a tabloid persona that is not the real Amy. People often use her image to sell their work".

Biografía

2007年5月18日にミュージック・ビデオの撮影アシスタントである4歳年上のブレイク・フィールダー・シビル（Blake Fielder-Civil）とアメリカ合衆国フロリダ州マイアミで結婚。
薬物中毒やアルコール依存症などゴシップの多い人物でもある。2007年8月に夫と共に飲酒・薬物のリハビリ施設に入所。2008年1月24日には再びリハビリ施設に入所[2]。グラミー賞を受賞した「リハブ」はリハビリ施設へ入所した自身の体験を元にしている。
2008年6月24日、16日にロンドンの自宅で倒れて入院し、検査を受けていたエイミーの病状を父親のミッチが告白。病名は「初期の肺気腫」。肺が7割程度しか機能していない状態となる[3]。同日、エイミーの代理人トレイシー・ミラーが「肺気腫になる恐れがある症状だと診断された」と弁明。一時混乱を招く[4]。

2007年10月18日にノルウェーにて、マリワナ所持と密輸疑惑で夫と共に逮捕された。その後二人は500ユーロの保釈金を払って釈放された[5]。12月17日には夫の司法妨害に加担した容疑で逮捕された[6]。

2008年4月25日に酔って男性2人を暴行したとして事情聴取を受ける[7]。5月7日に違法薬物所持の容疑で逮捕された[8]。

差別問題 [編集]
2008年6月―黒人・同性愛者・身体障害者へのあからさまな侮蔑に加えて、東洋人・日本人・インド人・パキスタン人への差別用語を込めた替え歌を歌っているビデオがネット上に流出し問題となった。このビデオを撮影したのは夫のブレイク・フィールダー・シヴィルで、エイミー自身は薬物の多量摂取により自失状態にあった。[9]

Elle trouve peu de temps après un emploi comme chroniqueuse « showbiz » pour la World Entertainment News Network et comme chanteuse dans un orchestre de jazz. Son petit ami de l'époque, James Tyler, chanteur de soul, envoie sa cassette démo à un studio. Grâce à cette maquette, elle signe avec le label Island / Universal avec Simon Fuller de l'entreprise 19 Management[8] et avec la maison d'édition IME. Amy Winehouse emprunte à la chanteuse new-yorkaise Sharon Jones son groupe DapKings, pour l'accompagner en studio et en tournée, offrant ainsi au groupe sa première occasion de se faire connaître[9].

Succès du premier album [modifier]

Représentation au Bowery Ballroom, à New YorkLe premier album d'Amy Winehouse, Frank, sort le 20 octobre 2003. Produit essentiellement par Salaam Remi, il comporte de nombreuses chansons d'influences jazz et toutes les chansons originales sont co-écrites par elle[10]. Des compliments sur le regard critique et posé qu'elle porte sur les relations amoureuses, le monde, la musique et elle-même[11]. La voix de Amy Winehouse est parfois comparée à celles de Sarah Vaughan[12] et Macy Gray.

En 2004, l'album est sélectionné pour concourir aux Brit Awards dans les catégories de « British Female Solo Artist » et « British Urban Act ». Il est certifié disque d'or en Angleterre en février 2004[13]. Amy Winehouse remporte le « Ivor Novello songwriting price » pour la meilleure chanson contemporaine, aux côtés de Salaam Remi, avec sa contribution sur le premier single, Stronger Than Me[14]. L'album est également en lice pour le Mercury Music Prize 2004. Dans la même année, Amy Winehouse participe au festival de Glastonbury, sur le Jazzworld stage, et au V Festival.

Après la sortie de l'album, Amy Winehouse fait remarquer qu'elle n'est qu'« à 80% derrière [l']album », en raison de l'inclusion par son label de certaines chansons et mixes qu'elle n'aimait pas. À la sortie de son deuxième album, elle déclare : « Je ne peux même plus écouter Frank - en fait, je n'en ai jamais été capable. J'aime interpréter les morceaux en concert parce que c'est différent, mais les écouter, c'est une autre histoire[15] ». Plus tard, elle précise ce point : « Je l'écoute différemment maintenant. J'en suis toujours très fière, je pense encore que c'est un grand album. Mais, avec le recul, il y a certaines choses que j'aurais fait différemment... Mais ce n'est pas parce que je voudrais faire les choses un peu différemment aujourd'hui que cela signifie que je n'aime pas ce qui se trouve sur cet album[16] ».

Succès international [modifier]
Contrairement à son premier album aux influences jazz rétro, la production du second album s'oriente plus sur le style des girl groups des années 50 et 60. Dans une interview, Amy Winehouse explique : « Après Franck, je n'ai plus écrit pendant 18 mois, mais lorsque j'ai rencontré Mark, j'ai écrit l'album en à peu près six mois - il était une telle source d'inspiration ». Au début 2006, les deux singles promotionnels Wake Up Alone et Rehab sont diffusés sur l'émission de radio animée par Mark Ronson sur Est Village Radio. Ces deux chansons, ainsi que d'autres inédits, commencent à être diffusés plus largement après l'exploitation du dernier single de Frank, Pumps, et sont annoncés comme figurant sur son deuxième album. L'album contenant 11 titres a été entièrement produit par Salaam Remi et Mark Ronson. La promotion de Back to Black commence rapidement après la finalisation de l'album et début octobre 2006, le site officiel de Amy Winehouse est relancé avec une nouvelle mise en page et des clips de chansons inédites.

Back to Black sort au Royaume-Uni le 30 octobre 2006. À plusieurs reprises lors de son exploitation, il se place à la première position des charts anglais. Pour sa sortie aux États-Unis, le 17 mars 2007, il entre à la 7e position du Billboard 200. Le 14 décembre 2007, l'album est certifié 6 fois disque de platine au Royaume-Uni et finit l'année comme la meilleure vente d'albums.

De nombreux singles ont été extraits de Back to Black. Le premier single sorti le 23 octobre 2006 est Rehab. La chanson atteint la septième place au Royaume-Uni[17] et reçoit le Ivor Novello Award de la meilleure chanson contemporaine[18]. Aux États-Unis, Rehab atteint la neuvième place au Billboard Hot 100 la semaine du 21 juin 2007, peu de temps après la diffusion des MTV Movie Awards où Amy Winehouse interprète ce titre. Le Times choisit Rehab comme chanson de l'année lors de sa sélection des 10 meilleurs titres de 2007. Le critique Josh Tyrangiel du Times parle de Amy Winehouse en ces termes : « Ce qu'elle est mignonne, drôle, fascinante, et très probablement folle » et « Il est impossible de ne pas être séduit par son originalité. Combinez ça avec la production de Mark Ronson qui référence quatre décennies de musique soul, et vous avez la meilleure chanson de 2007 »[19].

Le deuxième single extrait de Back to Black, You Know I'm No Good sort le 8 janvier 2007, avec une version remixée sur laquelle participe le rappeur Ghostface Killah. Il atteint la 18e place des charts anglais. Le titre Back to Black sort au Royaume-Uni le 30 avril 2007 et atteint la 25ème place. Une édition de luxe de Back to Black est également sortie le 5 novembre 2007 au Royaume-Uni. Cette édition contient un nouveau CD avec plusieurs faces B des précédents singles, ainsi que des extraits live et le morceau bonus Valerie. Le premier DVD d'Amy Winehouse I Told You I Was Trouble: Live in London sort le même jour que l'édition de luxe au Royaume-Uni et le 13 novembre aux États-Unis. Il comprend un live enregistré à Londres aux Shepherds Bush Empire et 50 minutes de documentaires retraçant la carrière de la chanteuse au cours des quatre années précédentes[20]. Le 10 décembre 2007, le dernier single de Back to Black Love Is A Losing Game sort aux États-Unis.

Frank sort aux États-Unis le 20 novembre 2007 et reçoit de nombreux commentaires positifs[21],[22]. L'album a débuté à la 61ème place sur le tableau de la Billboard 200[23].

En plus de son propre album, Amy Winehouse collabore avec d'autres artistes en single. Elle chante sur la chanson Valerie de l'album solo de Ronson. Cette chanson se classe numéro deux au Royaume-Uni au moment de sa sortie le 1er octobre. La chanson reçoit une nomination pour les Brit Awards 2008, dans la catégorie « Best British Single »[24],[25],[26]. Sa collaboration avec les ex-Sugababe Mutya Buena, B Baby Boy, sort le 17 décembre 2007. Il sert comme quatrième single de l'album Real Girl[27].

Amy Winehouse aux Eurockéennes 2007Depuis la fin de l'année 2007, Amy Winehouse reçoit de nombreux prix et distinctions. La chanteuse remporte les Grammy Awards 2008 dans les catégories « Enregistrement de l'année », « Chanson de l'année » et « Meilleure performance vocale pop féminine » pour le single Rehab, et son album Back to Black reçoit une nomination pour « Album de l'année » et remporte le Grammy de l'« Enregistrement de l'année »[28],[29]. Le producteur Mark Ronson qui travaille avec elle remporte le prix du producteur de l'année dans la catégorie non-classique[30]. La chanteuse obtient un Grammy dans la catégorie « Meilleure Nouvelle Artiste ». Elle chante You Know I'm No Good et Rehab à la cérémonie de remise des prix du 10 février 2008, par liaison satellite, car son visa lui est remis trop tard pour se déplacer aux États-Unis. Elle a déclaré : « Ceci est pour Londres, car Camden Town est en train de brûler », en référence à l'incendie du Camden Market[31].

Le 13 janvier 2008, Back to Black obtient la première place au Billboard pour la troisième semaine consécutive[32]. À la fin de janvier 2008, le porte-parole de Universal Music signale que les ventes totales ont atteint 3,4 millions d'exemplaires et qu'il pense qu'il existe une corrélation entre ce chiffre et la vaste couverture médiatique que la chanteuse reçoit[33].

Le 20 février 2008, aux BRIT Awards 2008, Amy Winehouse chante Valerie avec Mark Ronson, suivi par Love Is a Losing Game et exalte la foule en lui demandant de « faire du bruit pour son Blake »[34].

Aux Eurockéennes de Belfort, le 29 juin 2007Le 2 mars 2008, l'édition spéciale de luxe de Back to Black grimpe en tête des ventes d'albums au Royaume-Uni. L'édition originale de l'album reste à la 30ème place, après 68 semaines de présence dans le top, tandis que Frank se place à la 35ème position[35]. Le 12 mars, l'album se vend à un total de 2 467 575 exemplaires, dont 318 350 dans les 10 semaines précédentes. Cet album fait partie des 10 albums les plus vendus au 21e siècle au Royaume Uni[36]. Le 7 avril, Back to Black atteint la première position du classement Billboard des ventes européennes pour la sixième semaine consécutive et la treizième place au total[37].

Back to Black est la meilleure vente d'albums dans le monde au cours du premier semestre 2008, à 3,67 millions d'exemplaires pour un total des ventes de près de 11 millions d'euros (comprenant le téléchargement)[38].

Aux Ivor Novello Awards 2008, Amy Winehouse devient la première artiste à voir deux de ses chansons en compétition pour le prix principal, celui de la meilleure chanson (musique et texte). Elle gagne le prix pour Love Is a Losing Game et reçoit une nomination pour You Know I'm No Good[39]. Rehab gagne le Novello pour la meilleure chanson contemporaine en 2006 et reçoit également en 2008 une nomination pour la chanson britannique ayant eu les meilleures ventes[40].

The Girl Done Good: A Documentary Review un DVD de 78 minutes est sorti le 14 avril 2008. Le documentaire comprend des interviews de personnes ayant connu Amy Winehouse durant sa jeunesse, de ceux qui l'ont soutenu durant son début de carrière et d'experts musicaux (Jazz, Pop, ...)[41],[42].

Une sculpture de cire la représentant est exposée à Londres dans la galerie Madame Tussauds dans le cadre d'une nouvelle zone du musée dédiée à la musique. Le musée note qu'Amy Winehouse est « une véritable icône dans la musique moderne » et se voit très demandée par les clients[43].

Au premier semestre 2009, l'album "Back to Black" s'est vendu à plus de 11 millions d'exemplaires[44].

Plusieurs projets et offres de collaborations sont annoncés au cours de l'année 2008.

Après un duo avec Prince à la fin d'un concert à Londres, celui-ci l'invite à collaborer avec lui sur de nouveaux textes[45]. George Michael a également écrit une chanson qu'il souhaite partager en duo avec Amy Winehouse, faisant ainsi part de son intérêt pour elle : « Amy est la meilleure chanteuse féminine que j'ai jamais entendu dans ma carrière, ainsi que l'une des meilleures auteurs. »[46]. Pete Doherty a déclaré que Babyshambles a débuté une collaboration avec la chanteuse sur une chanson intitulée You Hurt the Ones You Love[47].

Amy Winehouse fait part de son intérêt à travailler avec Damian Marley, fils de la légende du reggae Bob Marley, en Jamaïque[48]. Elle a également commencé à travailler sur une chanson pour un album à venir, en collaboration avec Mark Ronson, avec une date de sortie prévue mi-2009[49].

En mai 2008, Pete Doherty a annoncé que le duo avec Amy Winehouse était en bonne voie pour le prochain album des Babyshambles. La chanteuse serait occupée à l'écriture d'une chanson avec le guitariste des Babyshambles, Mick Whitnall[50]. En outre, Doherty a déclaré qu'Amy Winehouse « enregistrait un paquet de nouveau trucs » et qu'il prend un « siège arrière » dans le processus de collaboration[51].

Amy Winehouse annonce le même mois qu'elle a écrit Loads of Songs pour le prochain film James Bond, et que « c'est à eux de voir s'ils le veulent ou non »[52]. Lui sont préférés, Alicia Keys et Jack White.

Tournée [modifier]

Au Bowery Ballroom, 2007Amy Winehouse effectue une tournée de concerts en septembre et novembre 2006, dont l'un de charité au bénéfice de l'Union Chapel à Islington. Le 31 décembre 2006, elle apparaît dans Hootenanny, un show télévisé anglais de fin d'année présenté par Jools Holland, en reprenant, avec Paul Weller et le «Rhythm and Blues Orchestra» de Jools Holland, la chanson de Marvin Gaye I Heard It Through the Grapevine. Elle reprend également la chanson Monkey Man des Toots and the Maytals. En février 2007, elle débute une autre série de quatorze concerts. Au cours de l'été 2007, Amy Winehouse participe à différents festivals, notamment au Royaume-Uni, au Glastonbury Festival[53], au Chicago's Lollapalooza festival, au Rock Werchter et au Baltimore's Virgin Festival. Toutefois, elle annule son apparition à Provinssirock à Seinäjoki en Finlande le 17 juin 2007, en invoquant un mal de gorge[54]. Au milieu de la controverse entourant son état de santé, l'usage de drogues et son mari, en octobre 2007, elle annule les dates de sa tournée pour le reste de l'année.

Le 30 mai 2008, Amy Winehouse donne une représentation à la Rock in Rio Lisboa au festival Lisboa au Portugal. En plus de ses propres chansons, elle interprète ce soir-là deux reprises[55].

Elle participe au concert donné à l'occasion du 90e anniversaire de Nelson Mandela à Hyde Park à Londres le 27 juin[56], et le lendemain au festival de Glastonbury[57]. Le 4 juillet, elle se produit au Rock in Rio festival de Madrid où sa prestation est décrite comme une « forte performance vocale », mais où elle semble éprouver des difficultés à conserver son équilibre[58]. le 12 juillet, à l'Oxegen Festival, elle donne un show en chœur de 50 minutes[59], qui a été suivie le lendemain par un deuxième concert lors du T in the Park[60]. D'autres représentations prévues comprenant Rock en Seine (qu'elle annulera à la dernière minute), V Festival,[61] et Bestival[62],[63]. Elle donne également une représentation en duo avec Pete Doherty au Albert Hall au cours de l'été 2008[64].

Le père d'Amy Winehouse annonce le 12 juillet qu'elle se produira lors des cinq spectacles pour lesquels elle s'est engagée. Après le dernier concert, prévu le 5 septembre 2008, et pour une période non définie, elle ne fera plus de représentations publiques pour des raisons de santé[65]. Le 29 août 2008, elle annule au dernier moment, et pour la deuxième année consécutive, son concert au festival Rock en Seine [66]. Les organisateurs comptent poursuivre la chanteuse qui avait demandé un cachet de près de 300 000 €.

Le 8 mai 2009, Amy Winehouse participe au festival de Jazz à Sainte Lucie. La chanteuse est apparue, après un an d'absence sur scène, ivre, oubliant les paroles de ses chansons et avec une attitude négligente pour le public présent.

Un autre concert était prévu le 31 mai 2009 dans le cadre du cinquième anniversaire de la boite de musique "Island record" mais celui ci a été annulé pour des raisons pour l'instant inconnues.

Vie personnelle [modifier]
Le 18 mai 2007, Amy Winehouse épouse Blake Fielder-Civil à Miami en Floride[67]. Elle admet qu'elle devient parfois violente avec son époux lorsqu'elle est en état d'ébriété. Dans une interview en juin 2007 avec World Entertainment News Network, elle déclare : « Je battrai Blake si je suis ivre. Je ne pense pas l'avoir jamais contusionné, mais j'ai ma manière de faire. S'il dit quelque chose qui me déplaît, je le lui ferai comprendre[68]. » Après une éniéme péripétie du couple, son mari Blake demande le divorce en janvier 2009.

Le divorce est officialisé en Juillet 2009.

Toxicomanie et problèmes de santé [modifier]
Amy Winehouse et ses relations avec les produits stupéfiants ont fait l'objet d'une grande attention des médias. Dans diverses interviews, elle admet avoir des problèmes avec la drogue, ainsi que des problèmes de dépression et de trouble alimentaire[69]. En août 2007, Amy Winehouse annule un certain nombre de spectacles au Royaume-Uni et en Europe, en évoquant son épuisement et sa mauvaise santé. Elle est hospitalisée au cours de cette période pour ce qui est rapporté comme une overdose d'héroïne, d'ecstasy, de cocaïne, de kétamine et d'alcool[70].

Peu de temps après, Amy Winehouse et son mari sont photographiés, ensanglantés et meurtris, dans les rues de Londres après une possible lutte. La chanteuse soutient s'être fait elle-même ses blessures[71]. Ses parents et beaux-parents rendent publiquement compte des nombreuses préoccupations que soulèvent pour eux le comportement de leur fille, en invoquant leurs craintes que les deux époux se suicident. En compagnie du père de Fielder-Civil, ils encouragent les fans à boycotter la musique de leur fille[72]. Le père de Amy Winehouse explique à ce propos qu'il utilise les médias pour faire des déclarations publiques, car cela lui apparaît comme la seule façon d'obtenir quelque chose d'elle[73].

Le 2 décembre 2007, les images de la chanteuse en dehors de son domicile, à des heures matinales, pieds nus et portant seulement un soutien-gorge et un jean, apparaissent sur Internet et dans les tabloïds. Dans une déclaration, son porte-parole reproche aux paparazzi de surenchérir sur l'incident[74]. Il indique également que la chanteuse est suivie par un médecin pour canaliser ses difficultés d'écriture[75].

Le tabloïd britannique The Sun rend publique la vidéo d'une femme, soupçonnée d'être Amy Winehouse, qui semble inhaler du crack et déclarant avoir pris de l'ecstasy et du valium. En janvier 2008, le père de la chanteuse emménage alors avec elle[76], et Island Records, son label, annonce l'abandon de plans américains pour une campagne de promotion sur son nom. Fin janvier 2008, Amy Winehouse entre dans un établissement de désintoxication pour une période de deux semaines de traitement[77].

Le 23 janvier 2008, la vidéo est transmise aux enquêteurs de Scotland Yard[78], qui interrogent la chanteuse le 5 février[79]. À ce jour, aucune procédure n'est engagée à son encontre.

Le 26 mars 2008, Le porte-parole d'Amy Winehouse annonce qu'elle se porte « fort bien » et il dément les propos d'un article publié dans un tabloïd britannique qui annonce qu'un retour en cure de désintoxication est envisagé pour la chanteuse[80]. Néanmoins, sa maison de disques estimerait que son rétablissement reste fragile[81].

À la fin du mois d'avril 2008, le comportement de la chanteuse et une accusation de voies de fait, provoquent des doutes sur le succès de ses efforts en cure de désintoxication[82] et poussent le père de la chanteuse et son manager à demander sa mise sous tutelle[83].

Depuis 2009, la chanteuse, en cure de repos sur l'île de Sainte-Lucie, semble avoir arrêté toute consommation avec la drogue dure. Cependant, sa consommation d'alcool reste forte.

État de santé [modifier]
Le 24 juin 2008, le porte-parole d'Amy Winehouse confirme que les médecins lui ont découvert les premiers signes de ce qui pourrait conduire à un emphysème[84]. Mitch Winehouse signale que les poumons de sa fille fonctionnent à 70 % de leur capacité normale. En outre, il dit qu'elle a un rythme cardiaque irrégulier. M. Winehouse a déclaré que ces problèmes ont été causés par son usage de la cigarette et du crack. Le père de la chanteuse a également indiqué que les médecins ont averti Amy que la poursuite de consommation de crack se traduirait par le port obligatoire d'un masque à oxygène et lui serait fatale[85]. Dans une interview à la radio Mitch Winehouse dit que la chanteuse répond « fabuleusement » bien à un traitement utilisant des timbres de nicotine[86]. Le porte-parole de la British Lung Foundation, Keith Prowse, indique que ce type de problème peut être résolu avec ce traitement. Prowse a également déclaré que son état n'est pas normal pour une personne de son âge, mais « le fait de fumer et d'inhaler des substances comme la drogue peut vieillir prématurément les poumons »[87]. Le Dr. H. Norman Edelman, médecin-chef de la American Lung Association a expliqué que si elle arrêtait de fumer, ses fonctions pulmonaires devraient revenir au niveau normal mais que dans le cas contraire cela conduirait à une baisse plus rapide de la fonction pulmonaire[88]. Les photos de la chanteuse avec une cigarette dans la bouche, prises le 23 juin 2008, ont été largement publiés[89]. Amy Winehouse est sortie de la London Clinic pendant 24 heures pour un congé temporaire afin de se produire lors du 90e anniversaire de Nelson Mandela au festival de Glastonbury et est actuellement considérée comme externe[90]. Au mois d'octobre 2008, elle est de nouveau à cet hôpital pour d'autres tests.

Problèmes judiciaires [modifier]
Les problèmes judiciaires de Amy Winehouse sont un élément important de la couverture médiatique que reçoit la chanteuse et sont largement commentés dans la presse people, sur Internet et à la télévision.

Le 8 septembre 2007, Amy Winehouse reçoit une plainte pour violation du droit d'auteur pour la chanson He Can Only Hold Her, à son encontre par son auteur et producteur P * Nut. Son avocat a déclaré que l'auteur recevra une part des redevances de la chanson et le paiement des droits. Auparavant, il avait reçu un simple remerciement pour sa contribution à l'album, sans être cité comme auteur[91].

En octobre 2007, Winehouse et son mari sont arrêtés en Norvège pour possession de cannabis. Le couple est remis en liberté avec une amende de 3850 couronnes (environ 480 €)[92]. Amy Winehouse affirme qu'elle s'était « trompée » lors de ses aveux, mais la police a nié l'allégation, en faisant remarquer que les policiers présents lors de sa confession parlaient couramment anglais[93]. Sa comparution a été reportée au 29 février 2008 en raison d'un conflit juridique où Fielder-Civil était tenu d'assister[94].

Le 9 novembre 2007, l'époux de la chanteuse et quatre autres hommes sont arrêtés suite à une accusation d'entrave à la justice liée à l'agression d'un propriétaire de bar en juin 2007. Le 6 juin 2008, les accusés plaident coupable pour la charge d'entrave à la justice, et pour coups et blessures avec intention[96]. Au cours de la procédure judiciaire, Amy Winehouse est réprimandée à plusieurs reprises pour son comportement par le tribunal. Le ministère public révèle que le propriétaire de bar, qui a subi un manque à gagner du fait de l'agression, a accepté 200 000 £ (environ 250 000 €) dans le cadre d'un accord pour entraver la procédure judiciaire et de ne pas se présenter au tribunal. Il affirme que l'argent utilisé pour dédommager le propriétaire appartenait à Amy Winehouse et que l'affaire a commencé à être révélée quand un intermédiaire impliqué dans la transaction, reconnaissant Fielder-Civil, a essayé de vendre au the Daily Mirror les images de l'agression prises par les caméras de sécurité.

Amy Winehouse aux Eurockéennes 2007Le tribunal apprend qu'Amy Winehouse avait prévu en octobre 2007 une réunion avec les personnes impliquées dans l'affaire. Celle-ci n'a jamais eu lieu car Amy Winehouse a dû assister à une remise de prix. Le propriétaire du bar raconte dans une interview qu'il a depuis cette agression des plaques de métal et des vis dans le crâne et que Fielder-Civil lui a écrit une lettre d'excuse depuis sa prison.

Le 17 février 2008, son époux Fielder-Civil aurait été hospitalisé après une overdose d'héroïne en prison.

Le 26 avril 2008, Amy Winehouse est libérée après un rappel à l'ordre pour avoir giflé quelqu'un, une « voie de fait ». L'incident, pour lequel elle a présenté ses excuses, restera sur son dossier et pourrait être utilisé à son encontre si elle est accusée d'une infraction semblable à une date ultérieure. Quand elle est arrivée, un médecin a jugé qu'elle était « inapte à un interrogatoire ». Elle s'est volontairement confessée et a été placée en garde à vue pour une nuit.

Amy Winehouse est arrêtée le 7 mai 2008, soupçonnée de possession de drogues, après qu'une bande vidéo remise en janvier à Scotland Yard semble la représenter en train de fumer du crack, mais elle est libérée sous caution quelques heures plus tard. Le Crown Prosecution Service envisage un temps de la poursuivre pour usage de produit stupéfiant, mais abandonne en raison de son incapacité à pouvoir prouver que la substance inhalée montrée par la vidéo est effectivement une substance illicite.

En réaction à cette décision, l'ancien commandant de Scotland Yard, John O'Connor a déclaré qu'il est un « scandale absolu que rien ne puisse être fait ». Certains membres du Parlement ont également réagi négativement. Deux habitants de Londres sont poursuivis pour avoir approvisionné Amy Winehouse en cocaïne et ecstasy. Amy Winehouse in Belfort (2007)Amy Winehouse wuchs als Tochter des Jazzmusikers[1] und Taxifahrers Mitchell Winehouse und der Apothekerin Janis Winehouse[2] zusammen mit ihrem älteren Bruder Alex in Southgate in London in einer jüdischen Familie auf.[3][4] Ihre Eltern trennten sich, als sie neun Jahre alt war.[5] Auf Anregung ihrer Großmutter Cynthia erhielt Amy im Alter von neun Jahren Unterricht an der Susi Earnshaw Theatre School.[6] Im Alter von zwölf Jahren begann sie an der Sylvia Young’s Theatre School zu lernen, eine Schule für britische Nachwuchskünstler.[7][8][9] Mit 16 Jahren verließ sie die Schule.[10][11] Nebenbei spielte sie in einem Jazz-Orchester.[12] Später besuchte sie die BRIT School in Selhurst.

Am 18. Mai 2007 heiratete Winehouse in Miami Blake Fielder-Civil und nahm dessen Familiennamen Civil an[13][14]. Sie tritt jedoch weiterhin unter ihrem Geburtsnamen Winehouse auf.

Musikalische Karriere
Mit 18 unterschrieb Winehouse ihren ersten Vertrag bei Island Records. Für ihr 2003 erschienenes Debütalbum Frank erhielt sie zwei Nominierungen für die Brit Awards sowie eine für den Ivor Novello Award. 2006 veröffentlichte sie ihr zweites Album, Back to Black. Am 8. Januar 2008 erreichte Back to Black erstmals die Spitzenposition der deutschen Albumcharts.[15]

Winehouse war insgesamt sechsmal für den Grammy 2008 nominiert und erhielt die Auszeichnung in fünf Kategorien.[16] An der Grammy-Verleihung in Los Angeles konnte sie nur per Satellitenübertragung teilnehmen, da sie aufgrund ihrer Drogenproblematik zunächst kein Visum für die Einreise erhielt. Als eine Bewilligung ausgesprochen wurde, war der Termin zur rechtzeitigen Teilnahme schon überschritten.[17]

Die bereits im Frühjahr 2007 veröffentlichte Single Rehab stieg im Februar 2008 nochmals in die Deutschen Single-Charts ein. Mitte Februar 2008 erreichte das Lied Platz 44. Zum einjährigen Charts-Jubiläum in Deutschland im März 2008 erhielt Back To Black Doppel-Platin, und Anfang März 2008 erreichte Rehab eine weitere Spitzenposition; nach 22 Wochen in den Charts erreichte er dann Platz 23.

Winehouse sollte ursprünglich den Titelsong zum James Bond-Film Ein Quantum Trost singen[18], aufgrund ihres damaligen Gesundheitszustandes wurde die Arbeit an dem Titel jedoch eingestellt.[19]

Ende Mai 2008 erhielt Winehouse den Ivor Novello Award für ihr Lied Love Is a Losing Game, das als bestes Lied in sowohl musikalischer als auch textlicher Hinsicht ausgezeichnet wurde. Im Jahr 2007 wurde bereits ihr Song Rehab geehrt.[20] Am 27. Juni 2008 trat sie beim Benefizkonzert zu Ehren Nelson Mandelas an seinem 90. Geburtstag auf. Ende Juli 2008 wurde Winehouse als Wachsfigur im Wachsfigurenkabinett Madame Tussauds verewigt.[21]

Gesundheitszustand
Der Drogen- und Alkoholkonsum von Amy Winehouse sorgt fortwährend für Schlagzeilen in den Boulevardmedien. Im Juli 2007 ließ sie auf ärztlichen Rat wegen eines „völligen Erschöpfungszustandes” kurzfristig mehrere Festivaltermine absagen. Am 9. August 2007 brach Winehouse zusammen und wurde deswegen ambulant behandelt. Ihr Management sprach erneut von „schwerer Erschöpfung”. Darüber hinaus kämpfte sie gegen Magersucht und Bulimie. Im Oktober 2007 wurde Amy Winehouse zusammen mit ihrem Ehemann im norwegischen Bergen wegen Besitzes von sieben Gramm Marihuana verhaftet. Sie kam gegen eine Geldbuße von 500 Dollar frei.[22] Allerdings musste sie sich am 29. Februar 2008 vor einem norwegischen Gericht wegen des Drogenbesitzes verantworten.[23] Ende November 2007 sagte Winehouse alle weiteren noch für 2007 geplanten Auftritte aufgrund ihrer gesundheitlichen Probleme ab.[24] Ende Januar 2008 begab sie sich in eine Entzugsklinik in London, nachdem zuvor ein Video veröffentlicht wurde, das sie beim Rauchen einer Crack-Pfeife zeigt.[25], [26] Laut Angaben ihres Vaters im Juni 2008 leidet sie unter dem Anfangsstadium eines Lungenemphysems, welches vor allem durch das Rauchen von Crack verursacht wurde.[27]

Mode
Neben ihrem musikalischen Talent fällt Amy Winehouse auch durch ihr extravagantes Äußeres auf, womit sie teilweise stilprägend wirkte. So bewirkte sie ein Revival der Beehive-Frisur aus den 1960er Jahren und trug zur Popularität des Madonna-Piercings bei.[28] Karl Lagerfeld übernahm bei einer Chanel-Modenschau im Jahr 2007 sogar Winehouse’ Stil; die Models trugen Beehives und wurden wie Winehouse geschminkt.[29] Für ihr Auftreten wurde sie von Anna Wintour, der Chefredakteurin der US-Ausgabe der Vogue, gelobt und angeworben.[30] Jedoch wurde ihr Kleidungsstil von Richard Blackwell, der jährlich die Liste der am schlechtesten angezogenen Frauen im People Magazine veröffentlicht, stark kritisiert. Sie landete auf seiner Rangliste 2007 auf Platz 2 nach Victoria Beckham.

Musikstil
Winehouse selbst ordnet sich unter Berufung auf TLC und Salt’N’Pepa im Soul-Genre ein. Sie wandelt damit auf den Spuren der Londoner Mod-Kultur der 1960er Jahre: Soul als Ausdruck von Subversion und Eskapismus. Dagegen schätzen die meisten Kritiker ihre Musik als Pop-Jazz bzw. zeitgenössischen Jazz ein. Auf ihrem zweiten Album Back to Black überwiegen Soul-Elemente mit deutlichen Anleihen bei Motown und der amerikanischen Musik der sechziger Jahre. Bei einigen Stücken des Albums (beispielsweise Rehab) wurde sie von den Dap-Kings begleitet, einer US-amerikanischen Band, die sich ebenfalls dem Soul und Funk der sechziger Jahre verschrieben hat.
